I first met Deborah Hall Branch, the author of Through the Eyes of Abuse, two years ago when I happened across an article she wrote about the power of the Holy Spirit. Since then we have become friends and prayer partners and she has joined a wonderful community of writers on SearchWarp.com. Many of us have enjoyed the opportunity to read her encouraging and sometimes challenging articles on faith, hope, and love.

I have been waiting for the arrival of her first book to hit the press and line the shelves for purchase and as soon as I was able, I ordered a copy. As expected, I was not disappointed. Deborah takes the reader on a journey through her childhood with such ease that it invites you into her world, as if you were right there experiencing every laugh and every tear. She candidly explains the physical betrayal of ones own body while being sexually abused - an aspect of abuse I had never considered before. In doing this, she gives a depth of understanding as to why children and teens feel dirty and guilty which adds to the reasons they keep their secret. The beauty of this book is that each chapter stands on it’s own, giving antidotes to specific areas of despair that always points to her Lord and Savior Jesus Christ, while at the same time, builds and weaves her entire story together, which leaves you with wisdom, understanding, and hope for victory in your own life. I recommend this book to everyone; whether a person of faith or not, abuse or not, it gives great insight to the world of abuse and the journey to a healthy and prosperous life. A big thanks to Deborah for sharing her world so that others may be encouraged. This book can be purchased on line at Amazon.com. The fact that the average person has only read six of these books or that so many really great books were left off the list. Most of these books are required reading for most schools at different levels so the number being at only six is kind of disturbing.Add to that, the fact so many books that weren’t listed in the top 100. Where is Hemmingway, Faulkner, Camus or Hawthorne? This is the problem with these lists. They are so subjective and random. Why does the media continue to do them? What are your thoughts? What book shouldn’t of made the list or what book should be on the list? Be sure to leave your thoughts in the comment section below.

The Spanish Sketch Book, or the 4 Amigos Go to Spain

All watercolor paintings by Arlene Wright-Correll
Inour old age, for the past several years, Carl and I have taken holidays with my brother, George and his wife Barbara. We have been all over the world and the American Southwest with them. We have seen wonderful things and have had great times. Thus, each year, we (Carl and I) literally save our pennies for one big 2 week trip some place with them. George, though about 3 years past retirement, is still working and we plan everything around the vacation time he can get. We have done cruises, Europe, the Caribbean, the Mediterranean, the American Southwest and have gone in all different modes of travel, including renting a big motor home for 16 days. Carl and I have done day bus trips and I like them because Carl and I both get to sightsee when someone else drives as opposed to Carl driving while sightseeing and me never seeing anything because I have my eyes on the road. George and Barbara have done several extended Germany bus trips with their gang of friends who fill up an 80 passenger bus and literally have control of what they are doing, so they have good bus trip memories. With that in mind, plus we are all getting long in the tooth, we four decided that we would avail ourselves of the offer by "Vacations to Go" and take a 14 day Spain Globus Bus Escorted Tour titled, "The Spanish Fiesta".
Little did we know! At this point, let me say that had it not been the 4 of us who make our own good time, we could not have endured this trip. We saw lots of wonderful things, but we were flying past the things we really would have stopped to see had we been driving. 250 to 300 miles a day and it was on the bus, off the bus, on the bus, off the bus. Plus the tour guide ticked me off about the 4th day, and ticked each of us off at various times, did not make for great relations. Most days it was up by 6 am, luggage in the hall no later than 7 am, breakfast at 7 am, and on the bus at 8 am. Barbara is not a morning person! Nor is she a breakfast person! Both Barbara and I are diabetics so we have to eat at certain times and in Spain as in most of the Mediterranean countries, everything closes down from about 1 pm until 3 or 4 pm. Siesta! Also most restaurants do not serve dinner until 8, 9, or 10 pm. Plus Spanish people, including almost all of the 84 tourists on this bus trip, party all night because they have big naps in the afternoon. There were lots of people sleeping on the bus every afternoon. The 4 of us could not stay awake past 9 pm without great effort. All and all, we had a great trip, but it was Carl and mine first extended bus trip and it will be our last. I think George and Barbara concur. Thus it was hard for me to write about this trip. Every time I started to think about it, I got irritated???.
That is until August 27th, 2005 when I started to think about doing some paintings of the trip. I had recently done one about our visit to the Spanish Square in Seville as you will see later on and we were pleased with it. I decided to do a second one as a painting essay of our trip. The map above shows our route. We flew into Madrid, headed north, and looped around the coast and back through the middle again to return to Madrid in order to fly home. Hence, the "Spanish Sketch Book, or the 4 Amigos Go to Spain" © is born! This will be a work in progress as I have no idea how long it will be to write this and paint what I remember. Along the way, as usual, I kept a diary about our days.
This article contains some excepts from it and is an example of watercolor journaling.
6/15/05 Carl and I left for Louisville airport real early. We are real anxious for this trip and are looking forward to it. We left Louisville at 6 am, changed in Atlanta and met George at the Islip airport at 2 pm. He had the champagne chilling in the refrigerator! We arrived at George and Barbaras in Sayville, NY 2 days before the trip and we got to visit and get ready for the trip, plus go to all the great restaurants they have in their neighborhood, plus get to eat some great New York Pizza! We had an opportunity to visit with our niece, Lorijean and her daughter Gialian. Gialian, who is 12 years old, had just received a lovely and elaborate community service award, signed and given to her by President George Bush. Three other signatures were also on it, including John Glenn and Bob Dole. Barbara and I visited, George had to finish some work and Carl walked into the village of Sayville to window shop and to buy some goodies that we can not get in our area. That evening George took us all to a lovely restaurant in Oakdale called Mamas and we had some fine Italian food.

Grant Jeffrey’s book, The Signature of God, sets out to prove that the Bible is the inspired word of God, passed down through the generations by the writings of the Old and New Testament prophets. The majority of open-minded readers will agree that he succeeds in his mission.

The Signature of God attempts to prove the Bible as God’s word by building a foundation of arguments based on historical documents, archeological discoveries, scientific knowledge, fulfillment of Bible prophecy, and other such evidences. Those who are not Christian or Jewish (and many of those who are) will find a tremendous amount of information they either didn’t know or never before viewed in the way Jeffrey presents. The author explores the advanced medical knowledge set down in the Torah, where God instructs the Jewish people to undertake certain precautions in dealing with sick people, dead animals, and other sources of infectious disease. Long before modern science uncovered deadly bacteria and viruses, God gave the Jewish nation a means by which to avoid them.

The book also delves into the Bible codes, without citing many of the speculative and statistically insignificant ones espoused by Bible Code author Michael Drosnin. Recently, many academic institutions have been exploring these “codes”, equidistant letter sequences in the text of the Old Testament books that make up the Torah. Jeffrey points out many of these codes, such as the name “Yeshua” (translated “Jesus”) appear a statistically significant number of times within the Old Testament. In addition, Jeffrey devotes a chapter to the subject of mathematics and the Bible, a subject rarely touched on in modern literature. He catalogues the work of Ivan Panin, a Harvard mathematician who uncovered a series of alphanumeric codes in the Bible (over 30 separate codes involving the number 7 alone in the first sentence of the Bible).

Jeffrey quite adeptly weaves his arguments together into a cohesive and formidable argument on behalf of divine authorship of the Bible, and this is a book both believers and non-believers in God will enjoy perusing. Highly recommended, this is one of the best modern books (written in layman’s terms) on the source and history of the Bible.

While I was flying to Australia I decided to take a look around the in-flight entertainment system. I then decided that since it was 10:00 at night, I could not be bothered to watch a film and did not want to read the article on catastrophic failure (for reasons too obvious to explain) in New Scientist. Thus, I decided to try an audio book. I had a flick through what was there and decided I would listen to the Rules of Life by Richard Templar. This, I must admit was unusual for me as I never read self-help or life coaching books as I think I do quite a good job of living. Anyway, there was only three to chose from so I just shoved the thing on and was done with it.

But as I sat listening I got more and more interested. This book was interesting, engaging and enthralling. I can assure you it would have taken a pneumatic drill to sever the connection between my ear and the headphone. Then a wallop in the face from the butt of the drill to get me out of my mesmerised trance. The book was simple. A set of numbered rules, from 1 -100, read out in order with an explanation of why and how they will improve your life. Many were common sense but some, admittedly, I could do with paying attention to. Here is a few examples that stood out to me (the bits in brackets are me): 2 You’ll get older but not necessarily wiser 11 Be the last to raise your voice 17 Aim to be the very best at everything you do not second best 22 Dress like today is important (oops) 26 Have a sense of humour 34 You’ll never understand everything (I’ll give it a dam good shot though) 38 Maintain good manners in all things 42 Shop for quality, not price (I’m sure, like me, you’ve flicked through a catalogue and think something is the best because its expensive) 44 Stay young 45 Throwing money at a problem doesn’t always work 60 Make sure your love making is making love 72 Never lend money unless you are prepared to write it off (bankers?) 73 There are no bad children 96 Check what history would say about you 98 Not everything can be green The thing I like about this book is that it is stating what may seam obvious, yet, there is something in the way he explains it and puts it to you that makes you forget you know this already. So I was not sitting in that chair think “yes, I know”. I was thinking something more like: “Yes, I know that but I also know I fail at that”. So, I’d say it’s unfair to label this book as states the obvious and then the end. The only problem I can find with the book is it is too short. It’s only…err… 52 minuets long. I was having so much fun listening to it I was highly disappointed when it ended. I want more. The flip side is that there is more. Richard Templar has written the rules of parenting, management, wealth and work. So there is plenty more where that came from. Well, that’s about all I can say about the book. I hope you will consider reading, as it is a wonderful read and even if – like me – you would not consider reading a life coaching book you could still give it a shot; that’s reading: you have to try all the genres to find the best books. Finally, I would like to leave you with my favourite and the funniest quote from the book: “They [your kids] want to grow up, have sex and use adult swear words.”

The Rare, First Book of Poe Up for Sale Again

Christened “the black tulip of U.S. Literature” owing to its once in a blue moon surfacing, a copy of the first work ever published by Edgar Allan Poe, will be made available by Christie’s for rare art collectors today. Tamerlane and Other Poems, a 40 page book, of which only 50-60 copies were made has only about 12 copies existing today. Believed to be composed mostly before he crossed the threshold of 14, Poe published the book when he turned 18 in 1827. The present copy which will be auctioned off in New York, belongs to a Los Angeles resident, 88 year old William Self, the former president of 20th Century Fox Television.

The house of Christie’s in New York expects this fairly old and tattered copy to fetch anything between 500,000 to 700,000 dollars. According to Francis Wahlgren, Head of antiquarian books and manuscripts at Christie’s, the estimate was drawn up based on the price the last copy of “Tamerlane” fetched when it was auctioned off 20 years back. 250,000 dollars in fact is an all time record price for any work of American literature.

As the present owner Self himself puts it, “it’s kind of a beat-up copy”, this compilation of 19 poems is indeed rather frayed and discolored owing to its age, with a marked V shaped snick on its right hand side margin. Funded entirely by the then nouveau writer and printed by fliers and pamphlets, the pice de rsistance of the book was the 403 line long verse “Tamerlane”. It portrays an Asian ruler in his deathbed, yearning for the one true love he sacrificed to build an array of successful military conquerings.

A very interesting fact about this first publication of Poe is the fact that, the author who also used a pseudonym of ‘Henri Le Rennet’, early in his literary career published the book anonymously simply ascribing it to ‘A Bostonian’. James Hutchisson, a Poe scholar and English professor at The Citadel in Charleston, South Carolina, attributes this as an effort on the part of Poe to pay tribute to his mother, Eliza Poe, who was from Boston. Poe in fact has printed the book when he had moved to Boston early in life as a result of his less than peaceful relationship with his father. “He never felt he was loved by Allan. He never got any affection from him,” explains Hutchisson. Amazingly, Poe did re-publish the work sometime later and apologized to his readers saying that these poems were qualitatively disappointing in comparison to his later works be it in the realm of poetry, Gothic tales, satires or hoaxes. The justification he gave however, was that they were never meant for the public eye, contradicting his move to actually resurrect these seemingly immature verses.

Poe’s archaic work will actually be a contender in a larger auction of 300 other books that includes rare books of Mark Twain, Jane Austen and Charles Dickens, the entire collection of Self. According to him, “These books have given me so much pleasure, now it’s time for them to give someone else pleasure.” The decision to sell off his invaluable treasure trove was influenced by the fact that he himself is at an advanced age in life and has already lost his co-collector, his wife Peggy three years back. Self also does not wish his children to be bothered with tending to his priceless but fragile collection.

Book editing can be a grueling process. If you are not used to critiquing your own work, then you may pass over errors without realizing it. Editing is important to produce quality work. Learning the basic principles on how to organize and condense your manuscript can save your book’s reputation — not to mention your own.

Tip 1: Be Concise as Much as Possible

A common mistake is including unnecessary content in your book without realizing it. When editing your work, make sure you eliminate clutter.

Clutter may appear in your work through useless and repetitive words in the same sentences. For example, this sentence, “The hasty brisk way that she talks,” leaves the impression that the extra descriptive words add drama, but the words “hasty” and “brisk” mean the same thing.

Tip 2: Vary Sentence Structure

Your readers might find your writing style dull and choppy if you always write your sentences with the main subject followed by the verb. This brings us to the second principle: learn to vary the structure of your sentences.

For example, saying, “Because I ate too much, I gained a lot of weight,” sounds better than saying, “I ate too much. I gained a lot of weight.” The first phrase not only sounds better and less monotonous, but it is also easier to understand.

By varying the length and structure of your sentences, you can achieve a smoother and more conversational tone, instead of sounding like a robot. Thus, your readers can relate to your book more and understand it better.

Tip 3: Use Active Voice

By replacing “to be” verbs with active verbs, you can change your statement from a passive voice into an active voice. For example, it’s better to write, “Anna ate the apple, ” rather than “The apple was eaten by Anna.” You avoid confusing your readers on who the “doer” of the action is in your statements.

Using active voice is an important editing principle. Active voice holds your readers’ interests; unlike passive voice of writing, active voice does not drag out your point.

Tip 4: Clarity, Cohesion and Coherence

The three C’s in writing, otherwise known as clarity, cohesion and coherence, are useful editing techniques. For your book to truly speak to readers, you must evoke a response so your readers connect with what you are trying to say. Use clear, connected and coherent words to achieve this result.

For your work to become clear, avoid using too much jargon or unnecessary words. As mentioned previously, keep your book concise and simple so readers understand your point better.

Make sure sentences and paragraphs clearly stick together. One trick is to use transitional words and phrases like, therefore, or, and so. These can show the relationship between your phrases and drive your point across.

To achieve coherence, follow basic principles of writing and editing as the ones mentioned above. Sometimes it’s not your fault if readers don’t fully understand your work. However, you can make things easier by using correct grammar and cohesive sentences.

Editing is essential to improve the quality of your work. If you are not used to finding errors on your own, then you may find self-editing too taxing. As long as you use these basic principles, then you will see how this process improves your writing style in many ways.
